The Whirlwind is a British fighter aircraft manufactured by Westland Aircraft and used by the Royal Air Force during World War II.[1] Alex and Pictus pilot the IA-type fighter-bomber, but the plane actually belongs to Alex's father.

The Whirlwind's main weapon fires four rounds in a rotating pattern, with a maximum of five sets of twenty rounds when at full power. The sub weapon dispatches two barrage balloons, one on each side of the aircraft, which fly forward unsteadily and eliminate enemy bullets. The Grand Slam Bomber calls Avro Lancaster Bombers as support aircraft, which fly in from behind the Whirlwind and eliminate enemy bullets.
Barrage balloons and Avro bombers also appear as enemies in Sonic Wings 3.
